on a Dell T3600 with a soundblaster card, audacity no longer is able to
record skype calls or general web recording. Most other Dell machines
using the internal sound source drivers (eg. no sound blaster) work fine.

Any help?

My first guess would be to go into Control Panel and check to make
sure the Soundblaster is still set up as the default recording device
(Control Panel -> Hardware & Sound -> Sound/Manage Audio Devices ->
Recording tab)

Check the offending apps also to make sure that they are pointed
towards the right device as well.

Unfortunately, I've never used Skype for anything but output ;-)
