Dear Group,

One of my friends has lost his administrator password and wants to
recover it. Is there anyway to do it?

All other accounts have limited user permissions.

Thanks.

That will not _recover_ the password. It will _remove_ it.
If there are encrypted files based on that login, they will be lost.

Depending on the complexity of the password, the tables you use, and the
time you have to devote, a decrypting engine like L0phtcrack may actually
be able to _recover_ it.

Tis true--useful clarification there.

John the Ripper or rcrack with rainbow tables, or uploading hashes to
http://www.plain-text.info/ can all do that too.

However, odds are folks who ask about password recovery don't have
encrypted files, and just want in, in which case, ntpasswd is one heck
of a lot easier.

I haven't done it myself, but Google says there are indeed several
ways to do it. Physical access to the machine seems to be a popular
prerequisite.
