Why can't I format my USB drive?

I am having some problems using a USB drive, probably virus related. I have tried different AV programs and other things but they all hangup about halfway through the process. When I try to reformat the drive I get the error message:
"You do not have sufficient rights to preform this operation". This is a single home computer, there are no other users other than myself. Help please.

it looks like You didn't run the format as administrative user.
You should have got a thus like message.
