Help with Powerquest Bootmagic?

Hi folks,

I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with the BootMagic product
originally from PowerQuest? I used to be able to get answers from them
but since they've been taken over by Symantec it's about impossible to
get anything out of them unless it's exactly one of the questions in
their 'knowledgebase'.

Anyway, the situation that I have is that I have a machine that is a
dual boot of Win98 anf Win2k. Bootmagic was installed on the Win98
partition. At this point the Win98 partition has completely lost its
mind and will not boot so I would like to delete that partition and
remove bootmagic from the mix. Unfortunately it appears that I can only
uninstall bootmagic from the Win98 partition which isn't possible.

So... how can I wipe out BootMagic and set up the system to boot
directly to the Win2k system? After that I can merge the Win98
partition into the Win2k partition and all will be well (I hope).

Thanks for any pointers,
Steve

I run into a similar problem between Win 3.1 and Win 95. I loaded
PartitionMagic/BootMagic on the other partition and changed the setup.

Would you be able to load PartitionMagic/BootMagic on Win2K??

I have PM installed on the W2k partition and it works fine. But whan I
try to install BootMagic on this partition I get a message something
like 'BootMagic is already installed on anotehr partition, please
uninstall there before installing here'. Unfortunately, uninstalling
from the W98 partition isn't an option unless I can get it back to a
bootable state...

Things I'm considering - 1) merging the two partitions or 2) doing a
Fdisk /mbr which is supposed to rewrite the master boot record, wiping
out bootmagic. But I don't know whether either of these will help the
situation or just make things worse. Arghhh!
get to bootmagic

Another way to get around this problem is setup the BIOS to boot
from drive A: , then use a Win98 boot disk. This might enable you to
boot into Win98.
If you don't have a boot disk, you might be able to get one from:

It's been a while since I've used Boogt Magic, but if you made the
"Rescue" diskettes when you installed Boot Magic, you should be able to
boot from those and uninstall it from the HD.

Nice thought but can't do that - it's not possible to uninstall
BootMagic that way. However I did get a response from Symantec that
solved the problem. It involved booting from the W2k distribution CD
and using the recovery console to do a FIXMBR, followed by using those
rescue diskettes to make W2k the active partition. From there I was
able to use PM to delete the W98 partition and reclaim that space for W2k.

Thanks for all the responses.
